Competition Rules

 1.  Surfers should check the whiteboard for heat details and shirt colour.

2.  Heats are 15 minutes unless otherwise specified.

3.  Heats start from the water, and you will get a 5 minute paddle out time on the yellow flag.  Note:  beginners may have a beach start.

4. A green flag means that a heat is on. A yellow flag means 5 minutes to the end of the heat.  A red flag signals the end of the heat.  NB. Please do not catch a wave before  you see the green flag.  When the red flag goes up come in laying down.  The hooter sounds the beginning and the end of each heat.

5.  Your best 2 waves are counted for your total score from each judge unless there is a countback (best wave).

6.    Don’t drop in on a surfer already standing up.  The surfer who takes off closest to the breaking part of the wave has claimed that wave.  Two surfers may ride the same wave if one rides left and the other right as long as they don’t cross paths.

7.    DO NOT free surf in the competition area, and check when you next surf before you go out.

8.    When you come out of the water after your heat, you are expected to judge the next heat to go out [you will have about 10 minutes to get ready]. Make sure you are down at the judging tent by the time the yellow flag is up. Make sure you judge at least 2 heats over the course of the day.

9.  Pick up any rubbish and check belongings before you leave.

10. Surfers in all divisions must surf  2 rounds prior to July Prize Round (Winter Surf Slash) and 4 rounds in total prior to Final Prize Round (Summer Surf Slash) to be eligible to win the prizes. If there have been any cancelled club rounds make sure your name is taken down so that you will be eligible for the prize rounds.

JUDGING GUIDELINES

Surfers are judged on every ride to a maximum of 10.  Judges give 0-10 on each ride.  Guidelines for scoring vary in each division (see below).  There are 3 judges for each heat plus a fourth person as a “spotter”, (who helps with identifying which coloured surfer is paddling for the wave).

No more than 1 inexperienced judge to be judging at any one time.

Only experienced judges to judge advanced heats and finals.

A wave is not scored unless both hands leave the rails. A manoeuvre is not to be scored unless it is completed.

BEGINNER: ( A novice surfer mainly catching whitewash waves)

Are judged on long rides standing up.  Extra points are given for going left or right, catching green waves and bigger waves.

INTERMEDIATE(Catching green waves, doing turns)

Are judged on left and right rides with backhand and forehand turns done with enough speed to finish the manoeuvre. Extra points are given for steeper takeoffs, bigger waves and good manoeuvres.

ADVANCED(An experienced surfer doing manoeuvres with speed and power)

Are judged on radical manoeuvres in the most critical section of a wave with style, power and speed to maximise scoring potential. Innovative and progressive surfing will be taken into consideration when rewarding points for committed surfing. The surfer who executes this criteria with the highest degree of difficulty and control on the better waves shall be rewarded with the higher scores.  Judges should only score completed manoeuvres, falling off during a manoeuvre does not score. Boards under 8’ only in this division.

LONGBOARD(Malibu style board Over 9`) Are judged on the same criteria as the Advanced.  Points are awarded for traditional surfing manoeuvres such as nose riding, walking the board, bottom turns, full rail or tail turns, cut backs, top turns or re-entries, as well as modern manoeuvres such as floaters etc, however the degree of difficulty when performing these maneuvers should influence the point score eg a nose ride in a critical section of the wave should score as a major maneuver compared to a walking the board in the whitewash as a minor manoeuver.
